What Have You Been Told About Single Mums Rights
It's become evident that in America, the single circumstance that can undermine your career is not a handicap, drug addiction, or illness, but rather being a single mother. Single mothers can land in this category through divorce, death, or by choice, but these are not the principle reasons why a single mother loses earning power. The main reason for this is because of an ingrained bias and discrimination in American business that strips away single mums rights, and discriminates openly against them.
Many single mums have been too worn out and over worked to be aware of this trend, but now this is becoming a major element in the fight for single mums rights. We live in a society that requires that in order to succeed we must emulate our peers, get better jobs, demand better pay so that we can put our children into better educational institutions. However, you will be severely disadvantaged if you are a single mum.
If you are a single mother, the perception is that you will be a business risk, and in many states, it is legal to ask for the marital status of a job applicant, and find out how many kids there are. Business owners claim this permits them to refuse to hire single mothers, and therefore evade paying health care costs for their dependents. Or, if they do choose to employ them, to deliberately pay them less to offset the perceived health care expenses. But, because it is allowable by law, this is not seen as discrimination. Single mums rights groups throughout the country are denouncing the legality of this type of practice.
Single mothers were asked to get off welfare and go back to work, but recruiting centers are decidedly biased against them. Lots of single moms work over 40 hours a week to support their young ones, with minimal help from the state or departed dads. Yet, they are hired at lower wages than single or married women, if they are hired at all. They have minimal support and have to engage someone to care for the children during their shift at work. If they get sick, the situation becomes bleak, both in terms of income and childcare.
Some years ago, the government census return showed that over 10 million single mothers live in America. Plenty of these single mums are starting to band together in small groups to help fight for single mums rights. Babysitting clubs, financial and social services are some of the benefits these clubs provide. Other single mothers are petitioning their public officials to change laws that make it acceptable to ask for a mother's marital status or if she has children. Single mums organizations are growing rapidly in every corner of the land, in their struggle for single mums rights, so that all single mothers like themselves, will have equal rights at work.
